This Is It is Michael Jackson's last film, and in fact, was never intended to be. It was backstage footage he was going to use for his own archive of the rehearsing for his scheduled world tour that was supposed to start in over the summer, and given the fact he died on June 25th, it obviously never occurred. I have really very mixed feelings about it, on the one hand, it seems a little bit ghoulish, and the approach of the film is nearly reverential. It's spooky because you're watching a guy that is just about to die, and you know it, and he doesn't, and it's kind of creepy. At times it does seem vaguely exploitive, and also overly - nearly religious overtones. ] During the first half of the almost two hour movie you see how how shockingly thin seemingly fragile he is, -- how he is a combination of very differential and very authoritarian. The second half is really the reason to go to the movie, because you see him as a dancer. As a singer, he has fairly weak voice, but as a dancer, he's unbelievable, even with all the dancers that are half his age -- he doesn't move with the same athleticism or the same energy, but he moves with an etherial grace that is really wonderful to see. I'm sure it will make a lot of money. It is, as I said, a disquieting film, but worth seeing if nothing else to watch a man who never lost his ability to entrance, especially with his feet. Four stars.
