Synopsis of
A Little Night Music

Based on Ingmar Bergman's film Smiles of a Summer Night, A Little Night Music is set in a weekend country house in turn of the century Sweden, bringing together surprising liaisons, long simmering passions and a taste of love's endless possibilities. Hailed as witty and wildly romantic, the story centers on the elegant actress Desirée Armfeldt and the spider's web of sensuality, intrigue and desire that surrounds her.

A Little Night Music is Catherine Zeta Jones' Broadway debut with Angela Lansbury. The story is Stephen Sondheim's take on a Midsummer Night's Dream. It's almost three hours. The first 15 minutes are a little draggy, but after that it's absolutely enchanting. Trevor Nunn who is a terrific director, directs and it's very British and who could resist "Send in the Clowns". I just really loved it. It was fun to be there, it was old fashioned, music theater. If you love Stephen Sondheim, you'll love this. And Catherine Zeta Jones should not be a huge surprise to anybody. First of all, you saw her in Chicago, but also, this is how she got her beginning. She did song and dance. She was a hoofer in Wales. So, don't miss A Little Night Music. Four stars.
